From stone — to masterpiece

Yulia Gofman

For over fifteen years I have been creating paintings using a unique technique — from natural amber dust and semi-precious stones. Every work begins with inspiration from nature: its colors, textures, and the play of light within the stone.

My journey started with a passion for mineralogy and painting. Over time these two worlds merged: I realized that stone can be not just a jeweler's material, but an artist's palette. Amber became my primary “color” — its warm shades from milky white to deep cherry offer an incredible expressive range.

Today my works are held in private collections across Russia, Germany, Japan and the UAE. Each painting represents hundreds of hours of meticulous work and thousands of stone particles placed by hand.

How stone painting is born

01

Sketch & stone selection

Everything begins with a sketch. Then I hand-select stones by color, transparency and grain size — like a painter choosing colors on a palette.

02

Preparing the dust

Amber and gemstones are ground to the desired grain. Coarse dust creates texture, fine dust — smooth gradients. Each shade is calibrated separately.

03

Layer-by-layer application

The stone dust is applied to the prepared base layer by layer. A final lacquer coating deepens the color and protects the work for decades.
